SWD (Drosophila suzukii) is a native to South-East Asia but in recent years has been found in most continents of the world. It has spread rapidly from the Mediterranean basin, then to Western and Northern Europe and was first positively identified in the UK in August 2012.
A number of commercial fruit crops can be damaged. Cherry, strawberry, raspberry, blackberry and blueberry are at particular risk, but other crops such as tomato, grape may also be targeted.
Many ornamental species and wild native plants eg bramble, may also be hosts. The optimum temperature for development is 20°C. The pest is here to stay and must be managed.
