Apple Ermine Moth
Species Name: Yponomeuta malinellus Apple Ermine Moth.
An irregular pest of several fruit crops, in particular apples. Damage can be serious. Caterpillars feed on foliage under a webbing cover, causing severe defoliation.
The traps should be place in the orchard before the first moths appear and maintained until the end of the season. This is normally from Mid-June until Late August. It should be noted that the exact time of insect emergence will vary with location and seasonal variation.
Trap Placement and density for monitoring: The trap should be placed at head height within the tree canopy and located centrally within the orchard, with at least 50m between each trap. A minimum of 4 traps per orchard is recommended. If previous attacks have occurred site near these points.
